SP Xtra: Editor's Blog

Hi, my name's Sammy and I'm the Editor of Simply Prizes magazine. Every week I'll be bringing you an update or two about any interesting competitions I find or any comping news. Plus I'll bring you any competitions or offers I find.

Reading out loud!

I’ve found a great little comp here that could help you encourage your children to read! My daughter is an absolute avid bookworm; my son on the other hand would rather play on his Xbox! And as my children are getting older and moving up in school years they are getting more and more homework and one of those subjects is to read daily for 20 minutes…and I struggle to get my son to swap that Xbox controller for a book most days.

The Book Trust have a competition running where you need to film yourself (or someone else) reading out loud. And in exchange for this you’ll be put into a prize draw with the chance of winning a ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ goody bag; it includes a signed book, signed print and other fun goodies.

Alongside receiving the goody bag the winners will feature in a compilation video to celebrate Cressida Cowell’s residency at BookTrust and shared family reading.

So, to enter you simply need to email across your video (which should be no longer than 1 minute) to: ad@hachettechildrens.co.uk. If anyone under the age of 18 appears in the video then you will need to fill in a photo release form which will be sent to you from the publisher. If the entrant is under 18 then the parent or guardian’s details must be included in the entry.

I think this could be a great little family comp to enter and with half-term looming in October it may help to pass some time too! Entries are open until 23.59 on 9th January so you have plenty of time to submit your video.

Good luck!

Tuesday Talk! (And a little prize draw!)

There are always hundreds of EOM (end of month) comps doing the rounds and I just wondered how many of you managed to be organised enough to do them? Every month I tell myself to start entering them in the middle of the month by doing a few each day so I’m not so inundated on the last day, but I never do! So tonight I’ll be settling down as early as I can and ploughing my way through as many as I can. (Vowing to myself that things will be different next month, ha ha!)

I tend to be quite organised with my comping routine but the EOM stuff just beats me every time. My main comping time is in the evenings but I do try and sneak some dailies in through the day if I can. I concentrate on staying a few days ahead of the closing dates so I can have an evening off every weekend and I keep a spreadsheet of wins to track prizes.

So, how do you organise your comping? I’d love to hear from you and I’d like to post the best tips on our Facebook page to help other compers get their game into gear! So you can either post on our wall  or email me at: info@oxonpress.co.uk. And at the end of the month I’ll choose my favourite to win a little something.
