Sammy recently asked on our Facebook page how old people were when they started comping and I was amazed at how young many were.

I always assumed that, like Sammy, most people would start in their mid-30s. But Chris said they started in Primary School with colouring competitions and Carol made me laugh saying she was 12 when she won a Radio comp and said that “Back then, you didn’t ask a gal her age!”

And Suzie still has a newspaper cutting with her first win from when she was sixteen. Tina started when she was 21 and is still going strong now at the fine age of 65.

Just looking at how long so many people have been compers really reminds me what a good hobby it is. The fact that companies have been running comps since the end of the 19th Century, shows that people have always loved entering competitions.

In fact, the very first ‘comping magazine’ was launched in 1913 and Simply Prizes and Coffee Break Winner are keeping the tradition going over 100 years later.
