He was sitting back, relaxed in a grand arm chair, she was sipping her sloe gin gazing out of the window, her eyes following the soft green slope down to the lake. He wondered if the porter had parked the car carefully and she hoped their luggage had been taken to the Deluxe Stateroom on the first floor - with perfect views of the castle grounds!
This is not the scene of a 1920's Agatha Christie novel - though all the glamour, excitement and elegance are there. Last month Margaret and Paul Marriott arrived at the Bovey Castle to spend two nights soaking up the decadent ambience of 5-star luxury hotel, that was once a grandiose stately home.
From the moment we arrived we felt like we had stepped into the lives of '20's high society. The castle and the grounds oozed with charm and class - with a touch of The Orient Express about them!
After enjoying our sloe gin, we were shown around the rooms in the castle and then the extensive grounds. Our room looked straight out over the fabulous gardens, the Devonshire Moors and beyond!
Our two days were spent strolling by the lake, adventuring in the woods and making use of Bovey's amazing facilities. There is a superb golf course, tennis courts, falconry, clay pigeon shooting, fishing lakes and a relaxing spa!
Breakfast and evening meals were also included in the prize, and eating succulent slices of finest Scottish smoked salmon on the Grand Terrace was a wonderful experience.
I am so glad I entered the competition. It was inside Devon Life magazine; two simple questions and a tie-breaker.
For my wining tie-breaker I had to say why I would like to win a holiday at Bovey Castle. My winning lines were...
"I dreamt of castles in the air but at Bovey they really take you there!"
And they do. Every moment was like a dream!
